Our team over in Europe recently worked with Omrin, a waste recycling company for the industries and residents located in the Northern region of The Netherlands. The recycling centers 400W metal halide sorting hall lighting was completely replaced with our BayLights. The lighting in the sorting hall operates from 6am to 10pm six days a week, totaling 96 hours a week. Not including the annual savings in maintenance and replacement costs, the yearly energy savings for the recycling facility will be about $3800.00.  With energy conservation and sustainability being their key values, we are happy that our BayLights contribute to their philosophy.

Although the park was established over thirty years ago, the 60,000 acre Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA), has never had a dedicated visitor center. With the support of the Recovery Act and Ric Alesch, Project Manager, the National Park Service (NPS) and its state and local partners will be opening its brand new Visitor Center at King Gillette Ranch on June 9th.

The beautiful 7,000sq ft. visitor center is located in one of the three original buildings built by the Gillette razor magnate in 1929.  The center is in a former stable, which was completely gutted and rebuilt to serve the new use and qualify for LEED Platinum.  The Platinum certification was granted on May 15, 2012.

Because the project was funded by the Recovery Act, all building products had to be built in the U.S. When asked how Ric found Lighting Science Group’s bulbs, he replied that he’d first seen and purchased one under Home Depot’s EcoSmart label for personal use.  After noticing that the bulb that he’d put in his own home had the Manufactured in USA mark and a great performance, he knew he had to contact us.

When Lighting Science’s bulbs were tested by the NPS’s exhibit design center, Ric said they won out on “Energy savings, environmental benefits, long life, instant on, excellent lighting quality, and of course they were American made.”  Lighting Science’s manufacturing plant in Florida was used to build all of the PAR38 lamps for the visitor center track lighting. Ric has been a leader in professional and personal use of LED lighting technology, and pioneered the first use of LED lamps for NPS visitor center exhibit lighting at Lassen Volcanic National Park in 2008. Also, the SMMNRA park staff have been leaders in LED lighting retrofitting in the National Park System, converting about 50% of their lighting parkwide to LED, with plans to make that 100% in the next couple years.

The King Gillette Visitor Center will be the first facility to be completely lit with LEDs and the first Net Zero visitor center in the National Park System (390 parks). Southern California Edison performed an energy audit of the space and found that Lighting Science’s lamps (when completely on) will only be using .5 watts per square foot.  And, because the building also has skylights in the roof and the lighting is on a programmable dimming system, the average wattage usage is expected to be even less. Lighting Science is excited to welcome the NPS to the Light Ages.

Here at LSG, we believe it is important to educate users on the lighting technologies that we continue to develop.  As we often participate in the Department of Energy’s Solid State Lighting conferences, we thought now would also be a great time to begin giving demonstrations about some of the products that we currently have available to everyone. Lighting Science Group will be showcasing our line of LED lamps available under Home Depot’s EcoSmart line at the Home Depot in San Mateo, California this weekend. Educational material as well as demonstrations will be presented on the differences between LEDs, CFLs and incandescent lamps. What is the future of Solid State Lighting?

“It is enormous and to some degree unknowable,” said Fred Maxik, Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Lighting Science Group. “The example I always refer to is the original digital audio deck, whereas now we have MP3 players.” “Think about having a street light fixture that weighs 20 pounds versus 10 years from now where it may weigh 4 ounces.”

Lighting Science Group Corporation today notified the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) that it has developed with Light Prescriptions Innovators, LLC (LPI) a highly efficient, high output and low cost 60-watt replacement LED bulb, and will submit it for testing to win the Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize (L Prize) competition. The bulb design is based on patented and patent-pending technologies developed by both companies.

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 established the L Prize to promote the development of a highly efficient, high quality LED replacements for the traditional 60-watt light bulb—the most widely used light bulb in America. Incandescent lights are wasteful and energy-hungry—DOE estimated that lighting accounted for 25% of all electric energy use in the U.S. in 2009—offering a rapid and practical path for significant energy savings from LED lighting.

The L-Prize criteria seemed futuristic when first announced, requiring a light bulb that works in current sockets and gets six times the energy efficiency (measured in lumens of light produced per watt of electricity used) of an incandescent and almost double the efficiency of a compact florescent lamp, while meeting other high standards for color rendering, life, quality, cost and availability.

“This bulb is yet another example of how Lighting Science Group is revolutionizing the science of light to produce state-of-the-art LED products that deliver on the promise of LED technology and further it’s widespread adoption, right here in America,” said Fred Maxik, founder and chief technology officer of Lighting Science Group.  “We are confident that our LED bulb developed in partnership with LPI meets or exceeds all of the criteria for the L Prize, making it a strong contender to win the competition, but we also believe that developing this product will further accelerate the transformation of the lighting industry to highly efficient LED technology.”

“This LED bulb will help accelerate America’s shift away from inefficient, dated lighting products to innovative, high-performance products,” said Roberto Alvarez, chief executive officer and president of LPI. “We applaud the U.S. government for challenging the industry through this contest to develop affordable and ultra-efficient LED bulbs that meet real-world user demands.”

In addition to a significant cash prize, the first manufacturer to fully meet the competition’s requirements will also be in consideration for federal purchasing agreements, utility programs and other incentives. However, the stakes are much higher than that. Energy efficiency means cost savings for the consumer, but on a national scale it also means less reliance on imported fossil fuels, greater national energy security, reduced pollution, and more innovation-driven clean-tech American jobs. According to DOE, an LED replacement for the approximately 425 million 60-watt incandescent bulbs sold each year could save 34 terawatt-hours of electricity in one year, enough to power the lights of 17.4 million U.S. households and avoid 5.6 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually.

Simon Property Group has retrofitted 25,000 lamps in carts in kiosks in 29 malls with energy-efficient LED MR16 lamps from Lighting Science Group. Usually, these kiosks use 13 35 watt halogen reflector lamps. Simon replaced these with 6 watt Lighting Science Group lamps.

By the end of 2010, Simon’s carts were able to save in energy consumption an average cost a year $194,753 and $56,912 in average maintenance/bulb replacement cost per year. The total yearly cost saved is $251,665.

A couple of weeks ago, I was doing some reading about off-grid lighting.  Research shows that there is an enormous amount of money that is spent on fuel-based lighting systems by rural and urban regions that are not connected to electricity grids. Naturally after reading this, I was thrilled to hear that our engineers had developed The PROLIFIC DC Series.  The PROLIFIC DC Series eliminates the need to power street lights from the electrical grid. They are instead powered by low voltage direct current electricity produced by solar and wind energy sources. “With the PROLIFIC DC series, countries around the world now have the freedom to install virtually anywhere environmentally friendly, affordable and energy efficient street lights that have better lighting quality than traditional HID lights,” our CEO Zach said.

The PROLIFIC DC series street lights aren’t just in development, they will soon light up Mexico City’s newly constructed “Viaducto Bicentenario” (roughly translated “Bicentennial Bridge”), which runs 23 kilometers (about 14.5 miles) from Lomas Verdes to Tepotzotlan.  The Viaducto Bicentenario, which is being built in celebration of Mexico’s bicentennial taking place on September 16th, will be a gleaming example of the most efficient roadway lighting technology in the world. Joe Gerstl, CEO of Gerstl Consultores, S.A. de C.V. invited BHP Energy Mexico S. de R.L. de C.V., Mexico’s leading expert in LED lighting technologies to help guide their selection of LED street lights for the project.  “This is the first elevated superhighway in Mexico that will be illuminated entirely by solar-powered LED streetlights, and our customer required the most efficient and reliable illumination system available to complement the advanced nature of its solar power system,” said Alan Barson, CEO of BHP Energy Mexico. “After extensive research and testing, we selected Lighting Science Group’s PROLIFIC DC series LED RoadWay 100 watt street light for this project,” added Barson. Zach and the rest of us here at Lighting Science would like to thank BHP Energy Mexico S. de R.L. de C.V. for introducing our PROLIFIC DC series products into Mexico.

Lighting Science has just recently finished a major installation relighting the streetscapes, parking lots and residence quarters Port Hueneme & Point Mugu located in Ventura County in California.  Port Hueneme has served the Navy since 1942 and for 57 years Point Mugu has supported not only the Seabees, but the Army, Air Force and Marines as well.  “The entire project at the two bases will reduce our energy consumption by 440,000 KwH (Kilowatt Hours) which translates into a reduction of 316 metric tons of CO2 emissions and will cut our annual utility bill by approximately $57,000, based on the average Ventura County, CA utility rate of 13.5 cents/kWh,” said Tom Santoianni, Energy Manager for Naval Base Ventura County. “This helps us to set the environmental standard for U.S. Naval Bases.”

Using our ultra-efficient, long-life LED luminaires built in the USA, a total of 1,178 existing lighting fixtures were replaced. 430 PROLIFIC Series RoadWay luminaires replaced the existing and older high pressure sodium cobra head street lighting fixtures throughout the residential areas. We used 449 WallPack luminaires to illuminate the exterior walkways of the bachelor housing facilities.  Since the fixtures contain and on-board occupancy sensor that reduces fixture wattage and light output when it senses inactivity, a considerable amount of energy will be saved during the early morning hours when residents are in their rooms.  105 of our ShoeBox luminaires which are low maintenance and glare free were installed to replace traditional parking and general area lighting fixtures. “For one of the largest lighting retrofits in Naval history, we chose Lighting Science Group products based on performance, thermal management, quality components, cost and aesthetics,” said Santoianni. “These lighting solutions deliver the best light distribution, excellent color, optimum performance, and are ultra-efficient in meeting our energy, environmental and design needs.” It was great to be part of this project especially since these bases have been such a huge support to the U.S. Navy for so many years and also provide Ventura County with the largest number of jobs.

As Zach Gibler (CEO of Lighting Science) said, “The federal government, as the nation’s largest energy consumer, has a tremendous opportunity and clear responsibility to lead by example. Investing in Lighting Science Group’s LED products will not only reduce the Government’s energy bill, but also lead to a range of other important benefits including safeguarding our environment and increasing our energy independence. The steps that NBVC has taken should serve as a leading example for military bases and government facilities nationwide.” The opportunity to show the Government that LEDs can save on energy and costs is a huge step forward for the LED lighting industry.

Using breakthrough Technology, art meets science with our streamline cast, ultra-efficient LED street lights that now grace the streets of Vista Verde Country Club in Tehuacan, Puebla, Mexico.  The community saw a need to illuminate their roadways and reduce energy consumption & maintenance costs, and we were able to bring balance to these needs by installing our PROLIFIC series LED street lights.  “With rising energy costs, communities all around Mexico and the world are looking for ways to save energy—the installation of Lighting Science PROLIFIC streetlights at Vista Verde is a perfect example of how buying green can save communities money while improving safety and security,” said Angel Fernandez, one of the principals of the Vista Verde Country Club.

Compared with traditional HID (high-intensity discharge) street lights, PROLIFIC street lights are at least 50% more efficient.  They’ll provide a more uniform light distribution, increase light levels, and save the residents of Vista Verde Country Club thousands of dollars in energy and maintenance cost over the life of the fixtures!  “We invited BHP Energy Mexico, our country’s leading experts in energy efficient solutions, to guide our selection of lighting for our new residential golf club community,” said Constantino Ramon, Manager of Vista Verde Country Club. “We wanted a sustainable lighting system to complement our eco-friendly project, but with so much confusion in the LED marketplace, we needed independent professionals to guide us.  When BHP Energy Mexico demonstrated the Lighting Science PROLIFIC LED fixture, we knew immediately that it was the best choice for this prestigious development,” Ramon added.

Testing results from an independent lab approved by the U.S. Department of Energy show that the PROLIFIC street lights outperform competing products on the market.  The maintenance-friendly PROLIFIC LED technology eliminates costly re-lamping and re-ballasting of HID street lights and direct line wiring is used in place of starters or capacitors further reducing traditional maintenance issues.

Lighting Science group recently entered a relationship with Pace Industries.  Pace Industries’ Harrison Division, located in Arkansas, will be supplying our FL manufacturing facility with die cast components for our residential product lines including the high performance, ultra-efficient, affordably priced and environmentally friendly DEFINITY retrofit LED lamps.  They’ll also be providing their die cast components for our commercial and infrastructure product lines, Traditional series luminaires, C2D Site and Area lighting family, and the PROLIFIC series of roadway luminaires.

So that we can continue to meet the increasing demand for our LED lighting products, we’re expecting to expand our manufacturing capacity and create a substantial number of new jobs!  As our CEO, Zach Gibler, stated earlier “This is a perfect American manufacturing match. The relationship will not only help increase our manufacturing capacity and efficiency, but it will also provide an opportunity to grow our U.S. workforce and increase sales. This is a win-win-win situation—good for Lighting Science Group, good for Pace Industries, and good for America.”  And, CEO of Pace Industries, Scott Bull, is just as excited about this relationship as we are.  As he pointed out, “In an era where many manufacturing jobs are being created overseas, this alliance will assist in creating jobs right here at home.”
